Method
- Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Brush them with avocado oil and season all over with garlic powder, salt and black pepper.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 minutes.
- Make the halal teriyaki glaze: add the soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, ginger and garlic to a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring, until slightly syrupy. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook 1 more minute until the glaze thickly coats a spoon. No mirin or sake is used at any point.
- Brush about half of the glaze over the salmon fillets. Arrange them in the air fryer basket in a single layer, skin-side down.
- Air fry for 7 to 9 minutes, until the salmon is opaque and flakes easily. The internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C).
- Brush the fillets with the remaining glaze, sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions, and serve hot over rice.
Notes
100% halal: this teriyaki glaze is made without mirin or sake, the rice wines used in traditional teriyaki. The sweetness comes from brown sugar and honey instead. If you prefer a bottled sauce, look for one labeled halal-certified. Cooked salmon keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
