Some dinners announce themselves the moment you walk through the door. Slow cooker chicken and gravy is one of them. Tender chicken breasts simmer all afternoon in a creamy, savoury gravy until they fall apart, and the kitchen smells wonderful — all you did was stir a few things together in the morning.

The prep takes about 10 minutes. Season the chicken, whisk the soup, gravy packets and broth together, pour it over and walk away. Four to five hours later, dinner is waiting: shredded chicken in a thick, glossy gravy, ready to spoon over mashed potatoes, rice or warm biscuits. It feeds six, costs very little, and it is completely halal — halal-certified chicken, broth and soup, with a quick homemade white sauce if you would rather skip the cans.

Ingredients

For the chicken and gravy
  • 2 lb Boneless, skinless chicken breasts about 900 g; halal-certified
  • 2 10.5 oz cans Cream of chicken soup halal-certified, or use the homemade white sauce below
  • 2 0.87 oz packets Chicken gravy packets about 25 g each; check the label for a halal-suitable brand
  • 1 cup Low-sodium chicken broth halal-certified; plus a splash more if the gravy needs thinning
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika optional, for warmth and colour
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter optional, for a richer gravy
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt to taste at the end; the soup and gravy packets are already salty
Homemade white sauce (instead of canned soup)
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Whole milk
  • 1/2 cup Chicken broth halal-certified
For serving
  • Mashed potatoes, cooked rice or warm biscuits for serving; mashed potatoes are the classic
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

Equipment

  • Slow cooker (6-quart)
  • Two forks for shredding
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Season the chicken breasts all over with the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and paprika, then lay them in a single layer in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, the two chicken gravy packets and 1 cup of chicken broth until smooth, with no dry pockets of gravy mix left.
  3. Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the chicken, making sure every piece is coated. Dot the butter over the top if you are using it.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the chicken reaches 165°F inside and shreds easily with a fork. Avoid lifting the lid — every peek lets out heat and adds cooking time.
  5. Lift the chicken out onto a plate or board and shred it with two forks, pulling it into bite-size strands. It should fall apart with almost no effort.
  6. Whisk the gravy in the slow cooker until smooth, then return the shredded chicken and stir so every strand is coated. Let it rest, covered, for 10 minutes so the chicken soaks up the gravy.
  7. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper. If the gravy is too thick, stir in a splash of warm broth; if it is too thin, whisk 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water, stir it in and cook on HIGH for 15 minutes.
  8. Spoon generously over mashed potatoes, rice or warm biscuits, scatter with fresh parsley and serve hot, with extra gravy on the side.

Notes

The gravy packets and canned soup are already salty, so hold the salt until the very end and taste first. Halal note: this recipe is 100% halal — use halal-certified chicken, broth and cream of chicken soup, or swap the canned soup for the quick homemade white sauce in the ingredients (melt the butter, whisk in the flour, then whisk in the milk and broth until thick). Leftovers keep 4 days in the fridge and freeze well for up to 3 months; thaw overnight and reheat gently with a splash of broth.

Why you’ll love this slow cooker chicken and gravy

First, it is almost impossible to get wrong. Chicken breasts and a slow cooker are a forgiving pair: the gentle heat keeps the meat moist while the soup and gravy packets melt into a sauce that thickens by itself. If you can whisk three things in a bowl, you can make this dinner.

Second, the gravy is the whole point, and it delivers. Cream of chicken soup gives it body, the gravy packets give it deep, savoury flavour, and the broth loosens it just enough to pour. Once the chicken is shredded back in, every strand soaks up sauce, so no bite is ever dry.

Third, it is a true weeknight workhorse. It feeds a family of six, doubles easily for a crowd, and the leftovers are arguably better the next day. Make it once and lunches are sorted for days.

What you need

This slow cooker chicken and gravy leans on pantry staples — just chicken, a couple of cans and packets, and seasonings you already own.

  • Boneless, skinless chicken breasts — 2 lb (about 900 g), halal-certified. Breasts shred into neat strands.
  • Cream of chicken soup — 2 cans (10.5 oz each), halal-certified. The body of the gravy.
  • Chicken gravy packets — 2 packets (0.87 oz each). These bring the deep, savoury flavour; check the label for a halal-suitable brand.
  • Low-sodium chicken broth — 1 cup, halal-certified.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder — 1 teaspoon each, for the savoury backbone of the sauce.
  • Black pepper and paprika — 1/2 teaspoon each. The paprika is optional, but it adds warmth and a lovely golden colour.
  • Unsalted butter — 2 tablespoons, optional, dotted over the top for a richer gravy.
  • Kosher salt — 1/2 teaspoon, to taste at the end — the soup and packets are already salty.
  • Homemade white sauce (instead of canned soup) — 3 tablespoons butter, 3 tablespoons flour, 1 1/2 cups milk and 1/2 cup broth, whisked into a thick sauce on the stove.
  • For serving — mashed potatoes, cooked rice or warm biscuits, and 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley for garnish.

How to make slow cooker chicken and gravy

The steps are simple — the one thing worth getting right is a smooth gravy mixture at the start.

  1. Season the chicken. Sprinkle the breasts all over with the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and paprika, then lay them in a single layer in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. Whisk the gravy. In a medium bowl, whisk the cream of chicken soup, the two gravy packets and 1 cup of chicken broth until completely smooth. Any dry pockets now will show up as lumps later.
  3. Pour it over. Pour the gravy mixture over the chicken and dot the butter over the top if you are using it.
  4. Cook low and slow. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or on HIGH for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the chicken reaches 165°F inside and shreds easily with a fork. Resist lifting the lid — every peek lets out heat and adds cooking time.
  5. Shred the chicken. Lift the chicken out onto a plate or board and pull it apart with two forks into bite-size strands. It should fall apart with almost no effort.
  6. Stir it back in. Whisk the gravy in the slow cooker until smooth, return the shredded chicken, and stir so every strand is coated. Let it rest, covered, for 10 minutes so the chicken soaks up the gravy.
  7. Adjust the gravy. Taste, then add salt and pepper as needed. Too thick? Stir in a splash of warm broth. Too thin? Whisk 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water, stir it in and cook on HIGH for 15 minutes.
  8. Serve. Spoon generously over mashed potatoes, rice or warm biscuits, scatter with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Tips for the best slow cooker chicken and gravy

A few small decisions make the difference between a good chicken and gravy and a great one.

Whisk the gravy smooth before it goes in. Gravy packets clump if they hit the slow cooker dry, and lumps are hard to whisk out once the chicken is in. Thirty seconds of whisking in a bowl saves the dish.

Do not salt until the end. Between the soup, gravy packets and broth, this dish starts out salty. Taste after the chicken goes back in and add salt a pinch at a time — most of the time it needs very little.

Use low when you can. High works when you are short on time, but low gives the chicken more time to turn tender and the flavours more time to marry. On high, check at 2 1/2 hours so it does not dry out.

Shred, do not chop. Two forks pull the chicken into strands with lots of surface area, and strands drink up far more gravy than cubes do. Shred it over the slow cooker so no juices are lost.

Variations and halal swaps

Once you have the base method down, this dish adapts to whatever is in the pantry and whoever is at the table.

Halal notes: this recipe is halal as written. Use halal-certified chicken, broth and cream of chicken soup, and check the gravy packet label. To skip the cans entirely, the homemade white sauce is just butter, flour, milk and broth whisked together on the stove — five minutes, and you control everything in it.

Make it creamy. Stir in 4 oz of softened cream cheese or 1/2 cup of sour cream with the shredded chicken at the end and let it melt in for 10 minutes.

Add a little heat. A pinch of chilli flakes, a diced jalapeño or a teaspoon of hot sauce whisked into the gravy gives gentle warmth without changing the dish.

Swap the protein. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs are excellent here — richer, harder to overcook, just as easy to shred; add 30 minutes on low. A pound of turkey breast works the same way.

What to serve with slow cooker chicken and gravy

It needs something underneath to catch the sauce, and the classic is mashed potatoes — buttery, fluffy, built for gravy. Rice is just as good, and warm biscuits are the move when you want to mop up every last drop.

A simple green salad or steamed green beans cuts through the richness — keep the sides simple, the chicken and gravy is the star.

Storage and reheating

Cool, then store in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. The flavours deepen overnight, so day-two chicken and gravy is genuinely better than day one.

Reheat gently on the stove over medium-low heat, adding a splash of broth if the gravy has thickened.

For the freezer, portion the cooled chicken and gravy into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat gently with a splash of broth. Make the mashed potatoes fresh on the day — they freeze far less happily.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cook this slow cooker chicken and gravy on high instead of low?
Yes — 2 1/2 to 3 hours on high works, though low for 4 to 5 hours gives a silkier gravy. On high, check at 2 1/2 hours so it does not overcook.

Is this slow cooker chicken and gravy halal?
Yes — as written it is 100% halal. Use halal-certified chicken, broth and cream of chicken soup, and check the gravy packet label. There is no wine, no pork and no alcohol anywhere in the recipe, and the homemade white sauce swap skips the canned soup entirely.

Can I use frozen chicken breasts?
Safer not to — frozen breasts warm up slowly and can spend too long in the temperature zone where bacteria grow. Thaw fully in the fridge overnight first.

Can I freeze slow cooker chicken and gravy?
Absolutely. Cool fully, freeze in portions for up to 3 months, thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat gently with a splash of broth. Make the mashed potatoes or rice fresh on the day.
